DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY

(SYNTHESIS OF NOVEL CHEMICAL ENTITIES)

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry established in the year 2009, aims to impart quality education in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at UG, PG and doctorate levels. This programme was tailored so that the students receive a sound knowledge in the aspects of Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Drug Discovery. The department has the required facilities for full characterization of organic compounds and polymers. Several analytical techniques such as FTIR, GC, HPLC, etc are available. The faculty members and research scholars of this department are highly qualified in designing and synthesizing new chemical entities, their characterization and pharmacological evaluation. The department is successful in getting financial support from various funding agencies like ICMR, New Delhi, BRNS, Mumbai, CSIR, New Delhi RGUHS, Bangalore and VGST Bangalore. The focus of the department is to synthesize new chemical entities for the treatment of cancer, diabetes and tuberculosis using computer aided drug designing with the availability of high speed computers on silicon graphics works station with Sybyl software from Tripos USA. The department also filed patents and working

FACILITIES IN THE DEPARTMENT

The department is well equipped with sophisticated instruments like HPLC, FT-IR, UV-Visible spectrophotometer, parallel synthesizer, Microwave assisted synthetic system, Microwave assisted extraction system, and in addition, the department has a computational facility for designing drug candidates. Department has the facility for custom synthesis of small heterocyles and new chemical entities (NCEs), Ligand and structure based drug design, in silico virtual screening and other molecular modelling techniques.
